Painting with a Lens techniques

I am taking a class--Painting With a Lens--taught by Rod & Robin Deutschmann. Today was the first day. I am learning some new techniques that I find most exciting to learn! Here is an image I took after class at my new house. The little bee is facing me on the stem. I like the pop of color in the background created by flowers.
Can you see why this class is called Painting with a Lens? Does this not look rather like a painting? I used no techniques on the computer after taking the photo other than to crop it a little more. I took this and the other images posted here as is by making the adjustments in the camera before I took the photo.

This one was taken so that the background was totally black, even though that's not what the eye sees. I love how the flower pops here. It's so exciting to be able to make an image that I see in my mind's eye, but I can't see with my actual eye! Here are a few more images taken today:
