Painting with a Lens techniques

I am taking a class--Painting With a Lens--taught by Rod & Robin Deutschmann. Today was the first day. I am learning some new techniques that I find most exciting to learn! Here is an image I took after class at my new house. The little bee is facing me on the stem. I like the pop of color in the background created by flowers.
Can you see why this class is called Painting with a Lens? Does this not look rather like a painting? I used no techniques on the computer after taking the photo other than to crop it a little more. I took this and the other images posted here as is by making the adjustments in the camera before I took the photo.
Here you can see the tiny bee in flight.
This one was taken so that the background was totally black, even though that's not what the eye sees. I love how the flower pops here. It's so exciting to be able to make an image that I see in my mind's eye, but I can't see with my actual eye! Here are a few more images taken today:

Beautiful! They do look like paintings! BTW--Thanks for your help with my own budding photographer and her camera purchase. I didn't get back to you like I wanted, but your expertise and time were much appreciated.

These photographs are so great! What lens do you use to do this?

Honestly, I can't remember! I may have had my 50mm 1.8 lens by then. If so, I probably did these pics with that one.

The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens and can usually be found for somewhere around $100-120. It's a very affordable lens & has become my favorite of the 3 lenses I have.
